Miami Heat and Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories After Recent Detentions
The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half scores versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a decisive 146-114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA game since player Terry Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also arrested as part of a extensive FBI probe into sports betting. The two individuals deny the claims.
However, the Heat were focused as they scored 86 first-half points to lead the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through the situation."
The Trail Blazers also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the team to a convincing 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and investigating."
