UK Expands Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning List with An additional 11 Destinations
British government has added an additional eleven new countries to its travel alert register concerning the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.
The expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a global increase in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.
Only recently, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to a number of serious incidents like the deadly loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical typically utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for ingestion.
Although it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.
Yet in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.
Government Recommendations for Travellers
Government minister a senior official stated that every traveler should recognize the indicators of methanol contamination.
"While having drinks abroad, choose trusted places and refrain from homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.
"If something feels off, for example a headache that's way worse than typical or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."
The entire list of countries listed as posing a risk of industrial alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
